# When Tip Weights Apply

> Learn why updating a role's tip weight only changes tips going forward

Every time card saves its role's tip weight the moment it is created. Tips for that shift are always calculated using the weight saved on the card.

This means updating a role's tip weight only affects shifts worked from that point forward. Shifts that already happened keep the weight they were worked at.

  **Example:**

  * Veronica works a shift on August 1st, while her role's tip weight is 50.
  * On August 15th, you update her role's tip weight to 75.
  * Her August 1st shift still uses a weight of 50.
  * Any shift she works after August 15th uses a weight of 75.
  * If both shifts fall in the same pay period, both weights are counted.

  To have a weight apply to a whole pay period, update it **before** that pay period begins.

  <Accordion title="Does re-saving a time card update its tip weight?">
    No. The time card keeps the weight it was created with. Editing a card's hours can change the tip amounts for that shift, but never its tip weight.

  <Accordion title="How do I apply a new tip weight to a shift that already happened?">
    Delete the time card and create it again. The new time card saves your current tip weight, and tips are redistributed.

    <Warning>If payroll has already been run for that pay period, those tips are frozen. Reach out to Dripos Support before changing any time cards in a closed period.</Warning>

  <Accordion title="What happens when I turn Weighted Tip Splitting on or off?">
    Only future time cards are affected. Existing time cards keep the weight they were created with, and the weights on your roles are right where you left them when you turn it back on.
