When you onboard onto payroll as a W-2 employee, you will sign a federal W-4. You may also have to sign a state W-4, depending on which state you live in.

These documents determine how much in taxes get withheld from your paycheck. If you make a mistake when signing or want to change your withholding election, you may need to re-sign your W-4.

If you have claimed exempt from withholding on your federal W-4 the IRS requires that you re-sign it each year between January 1st and February 15th.
